About Duncan:
Duncan led the PGCE in Secondary Music at the University of Sussex for twenty-one years and prior to this was a secondary classroom music teacher in West Sussex. In this role he has been involved in training hundreds of secondary music teachers and many of his ex-students are teaching in East and West Sussex. In addition, he has some experience in supporting non-specialist Primary teachers to teach music.
In 2005 he was awarded a Higher Education Academy National Teaching Fellowship. He held the post of Director of Teaching and Learning in the School of Education and Social Work from 2012-2016 and has served as a member of the Department for Education National Curriculum Expert Subject Advisory Group for Music.
In 2016 and again in 2018 he undertook research with Dr. Ally Daubney into changes in Secondary Music curriculum provision in schools in England which has been widely cited.
He is a keen advocate of music technology and has written a number of publications as well as presenting and leading sessions at various education conferences. He also sings in Brighton Festival Chorus, plays trumpet and chairs the Jazz in Education Curriculum Working Group.
Duncan has now retired but continues his association with Sussex University, having been made an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Education.
