An engaging evening

Six lucky young musicians from West Sussex Music had the opportunity to meet and learn from professional members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) recently.

Students from West Sussex Music Centre ensembles had the chance to meet the players from the RPO, before enjoying a programme of chamber music by Elgar, Mozart, Schubert, and Shostakovich at The Hawth in Crawley.

This inspiring opportunity came about because the RPO is a hub partner of the Sussex Music Hub and has been working with West Sussex Music on a programme to provide additional experiences for young people in Crawley.

James Underwood, Chief Executive for West Sussex Music, said:

“As part of Sussex Music Hub, we work closely with many important musical partners to ensure young people get to benefit from a diverse range of expertise. The chance for our students to watch the RPO’s musicians for free and to spend time with them in conversation was a really valuable opportunity. My thanks go to the team at RPO.”

West Sussex Music and RPO are already planning their next events for the spring. There will be two workshops for children and young people that will take place on the weekend of the 5 and 6 April in Crawley.

The RPO is recognised as the UK’s most in-demand orchestra. Its mission is to enrich lives through orchestral experiences that are uncompromising in their excellence and inclusive in their appeal, places it at the forefront of music-making in the UK and internationally. Typically performing approximately 200 concerts a year and with a worldwide live and online audience of more than 60 million people, the orchestra embraces a broad repertoire and reaches a diverse audience.
