Orchestras Inc half term success

There was joy in the air when two orchestras came together this weekend, combining young people of varying abilities and ages to perform as one.

Orchestras Inc. is our incredible SEND ensemble and is open to children and young people under 25, with additional needs, including those attending special schools, those at mainstream schools or colleges with additional needs and those who are home schooled.

For the last four weeks the group has met every Saturday at Horsham Music Centre based at Millais School in Horsham discovering the joy in playing instruments. Some of the young people were returning students who had performed with Orchestras Inc. before, whilst others were new to the group. Regardless of age, experience or skill, all the children and young people had the opportunity to be as involved in the orchestra during their sessions as they liked.

The aim was to work towards a sharing of creative responses to A Sorcerer’s Apprentice with their colleagues in the West Sussex Youth Orchestra, which also meets at Horsham Music Centre, whilst having plenty of fun along the way.

On the Saturday, Orchestras Inc and West Sussex Youth Orchestra performed to parents and carers.

Alison Sutton, Assistant Head and Inclusion Lead at West Sussex Music, said,

“It was a moment of pure joy when all the young people were performing together. It’s an incredible chance for both orchestras to perform with each other and having the opportunity to hear all those instruments and young people together is something truly special. We were all grinning at the end.”

Orchestras Inc. is open to young people from anywhere with a parent or carer for support. No previous musical experience is required, and activities are adapted to individual participants.
