Winter holiday fun

More than 100 places were filled in our recent holiday activities over the winter break at venues in Bognor Regis, Crawley and Littlehampton.

Children and young people had the opportunity to learn how to write and perform rap and music lyrics, to perform in a rock band, or learn how to be DJ and Music Production.

At Bognor Regis there were sessions in rap and lyric writing, where attendees developed their skills in creative writing, rhyming and rhythm, as well as recording a song as part of a group, collaborating in singing and songwriting and performing with their peers.

In Crawley, young people were able to take part in music production workshops, giving them the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of DJing and music production by using decks and live performance technology. They also had the chance to compose music to video and create their own beats and songs.

Over in Littlehampton, young people with a passion for playing guitar, bass, drums, keyboard or singing took part in a workshop to build a rock band. As part of the course they developed their instrumental skills, learned new songs, new chords, progressions and riffs and had fun whilst making new friends!

Elizabeth Leondaritis, Youth Engagement Manager at West Sussex Music, said:

“We’ve been thrilled by the number of children and young people who have joined us to make music over the winter holidays. All came with an interest in music but not necessarily a lot of experience, but they’ve all left with knowledge and confidence. For the more experienced and confident musicians, this was an excellent opportunity to hone their skills – before joining some of our other projects.”

She added: “As ever, I’m indebted to West Sussex County Council’s Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) scheme which has enabled us to offer free places to families in receipt of free schools meals meaning that finance hasn’t been a barrier to getting involved.”

Holiday activities will be taking place again in April, see here for further details.
