Incredible donation

The team at West Sussex Music was overjoyed when a member of the public contacted the organisation to donate not one, but six instruments recently.

Recently Sue Edwards contacted WSM to arrange the donation of a Boosey & Hawkes clarinet in B flat; a pair of Boosey & Hawkes Edgware clarinets in B flat and A; a Yamaha tenor trombone (student model); a Yamaha tenor trombone (more advanced level) and an Edwards bass trombone (professional model).

This includes a trombone that a neighbour donated when she heard what Sue was planning to do.

Sue’s family was involved with the WSM many years ago and were so impressed by the confidence and expertise gained, and opportunities afforded, to their younger son who learnt the trombone and progressed through groups to the West Sussex Youth Orchestra that they wanted to give something back.

Donating instruments was an easy decision to make for Sue, she said:

“We have seen the delight that taking part in music can bring, the confidence it can encourage and, importantly, the fostering of an ability to work in harmony with others – no apologies for the pun! Every child should have the opportunity to join in with making music through learning an instrument. Sadly, for those whose family circumstances do not permit this, a vital opportunity is lost and, for some children, the sad memory of what might have been will remain with them throughout their lives.”

She added: “This was an opportunity to give something back in recognition of all the help, encouragement and opportunities that have been provided for our family, in various localities, over very many years. We would definitely recommend others donate to this most worthwhile cause if they have the ability to do so. Enhancing the lives of our young people with such positive, enriching opportunities can never be considered peripheral.”

James Underwood, Chief Executive for West Sussex Music, said:

“Ensuring that young learners have access to good quality instruments is fundamental to helping the next generation of musicians to progress and Sue’s gift helps us do that. We thank her for thinking of West Sussex Music and the work we do to support young people’s music-making. We’ll ensure the instruments are available for use by children who will most benefit.”
